Lawrence .- A grand jury investigation of corruption and misuse of printing equipment in the School Department could end soon, according to sources close to NotiLatino.com. On Friday, authorities had summoned the last two people involved in the scandal.
Santiago Matías, a local Spanish radio personality co-host of the program "El Calentón de la Mañana" (Warming up the morning) and producer of the "Latin Pride National Awards", was questioned last Friday in Boston as part of the ongoing investigation. Presumably the printing press of the School Department was used to print the event programs of the 2008 night of the awards using high quality material, but Matías never paid for the job.
School Committee member James Vittorioso complained In October that the organizers of the Latin Pride Awards generated thousands of dollars from the use of school facilities "without paying a single penny to the School Department". The 2008 awards ceremony was held at the High School Performance Center at $40 the general admission.
The grand jury has one last person to listen to before completing the round of interrogations of those involved in the scandal. That person is former School Committee member, Omaira Mejía. Mejia's political campaign materials ware allegedly printed for free in 2007 using the press of the School Department.
